‘The Round Bed’ is a staged photograph of a sleeping girl by Emilie Flower, taken during the November floods in Yorkshire, England, 2019. The photograph was displayed as a 10m long billboard on corrugated iron sheeting at Cheragi Art Show 7 in Chittagong, Bangladesh, where it was interpreted as a staged photograph of a dead foreigner.
“After so many collaborative, advocarial, activist, theatrical and testimonial film projects, these simple and sparse photos are something different. Making something for the Cheragi show was an invitation to unsettle some of my own stories, and processes …The piece is an example of the retreat to the pre-modern for anchoring, the distraction of the exotic in the trans-local and something simple about how much meaning changes when we hold different essential and storied aesthetic assumptions.”
